Refraction

Light changes direction when it passes from one trasparent material into another. This change in the direction of light is called refraction.

There are two effects of refraction:
(a) an object in water appears nearer to the surface than it really is
(b) an object such as a stick placed in water appears to be bent

A straw appears bent in a glass of water.
